Phase-aware coaching

Set your current phase and Plates adjusts all thresholds and feedback accordingly:

Cutting

Target: 0.5 - 1.0% BW/week loss

Warns if losing too fast (muscle risk) or plateauing for 2+ weeks. Shows energy deficit estimate.

Bulking

Target: 0.1 - 0.5% BW/week gain

Warns if gaining too fast (excess fat) or not gaining at all. Shows surplus estimate.

Maintaining

Target: less than 0.25% drift

Flags unexpected drift in either direction. Confirms stability when weight stays within range.

Coaching status categories

On track - rate within target range for your phase
Losing too fast - exceeding 1% BW/week, muscle preservation at risk
Gaining too fast - exceeding lean gain rate, likely accumulating excess fat
Plateauing - no meaningful change for 14+ days despite active phase
Drifting - moving opposite to your stated goal

No calorie counting required

The energy balance estimate uses the relationship between weight change and energy (approximately 3500 kcal per pound of body mass change). It shows a range like "roughly a 450-750 kcal/day deficit" with explicit disclaimers that this is an estimate derived from scale weight, not precise calorie tracking.

You get actionable insight without the burden of tracking every meal. The number tells you whether your nutrition strategy is working at the macro level.

Smoothed averages filter daily noise

Daily weight fluctuates due to water retention, sodium intake, timing, and gut contents. Plates shows:

The coaching status uses the 14-day slope, so a single heavy meal or dehydrated morning won't trigger false alarms.

Data readiness levels

The system gates insights based on how much data it has, so you never see unreliable numbers:

Insufficient

Fewer than 4 entries or 7 days. Shows a prompt to keep logging. No trend or coaching yet.

Basic

4+ entries, 7+ days. Chart and phase picker available. Basic trend visible but coaching not yet reliable.

Full

8+ entries, 14+ days in current phase. All coaching categories active: status, projection, energy balance, rate warnings.

Integrates with your training

Body weight phase feeds back into the training suggestion engine. During a cut, progression suggestions become more conservative because maintaining strength is the win. During a bulk, the engine is more aggressive with weight increases because surplus calories support recovery.
